Castle Wedding Venues in North Wales

Wales is often called the castle capital of the world, so it's no surprise so many couples dream of saying "I do" behind castle walls. But castle venues vary hugely — from intimate Tudor halls for 20 to estates that can welcome hundreds.
Here are four to put on your list, with a quick guide to who each suits best. Capacities and details are from each venue's published information; always confirm with the venue directly.
1. Ruthin Castle, Denbighshire
Best for: a full castle wedding with everyone staying over.
Ruthin Castle's story begins in 1277, and today it's a hotel and spa set in acres of countryside. The Grand Salon hosts up to 100 for the ceremony and wedding breakfast, rising to 120 in the evening, with a private terrace overlooking the battlements. Smaller weddings suit Bertie's, which seats 60. Guests can stay on site, enjoy the spa and finish the night in the Tafarn y Ddraig tavern.
It's an easy drive from Denbigh, Mold, Wrexham, Rhyl and Chester.

2. Gwrych Castle, Abergele
Best for: big weddings and big wow factor.
You might recognise Gwrych as the UK home of I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! This Grade I listed castle sits in 300 acres of parkland overlooking the Irish Sea, with 18 battlemented towers. It's licensed for ceremonies in seven indoor areas and the gardens, and can welcome up to 500 people across the whole site.
Worth knowing: the venue doesn't supply marquees, open flames aren't allowed, and confetti must be fully biodegradable. (Gwrych Castle)
3. Gwydir Castle, Llanrwst
Best for: intimate weddings and elopements.
In the foothills of Snowdonia, Gwydir is a Grade I listed Tudor house where ceremonies take place in the Tudor hall beside a log fire. It's perfect for small weddings of up to 20 guests, with exclusive use of around ten acres of gardens — fountains, topiary and resident peacocks included. (Gwydir Castle)
4. Château Rhianfa, Anglesey
Best for: fairytale turrets and sea views.
Not strictly a castle, but with its French-style turrets on the shores of the Menai Strait near Menai Bridge, Château Rhianfa gives you the storybook look. It offers exclusive-use weddings as well as smaller packages. (Château Rhianfa)

What to ask a castle venue
- Are there steps or uneven floors — and is there step-free access for older guests?
- Is there a wet-weather plan for outdoor ceremonies and photos?
- Are candles, confetti or sparklers allowed?
- How many bedrooms are on site, and where's the nearest overflow accommodation?
- Is exclusive use available, or could another wedding be on the same day?
